YouTube Shorts max length in 2026

A YouTube Short can run up to three minutes, as long as it's square or vertical. Wider than tall, or longer than three minutes, and YouTube files it as a regular video instead.

What makes an upload a Short

Shape and length are the whole rule: a square or vertical video of three minutes or less becomes a Short, and a wider one stays a regular video no matter how brief it is. That's been true for anything uploaded since October 15, 2024 (Official Artist Channels followed from December 8, 2025). Before that change, a Short topped out at 60 seconds.

YouTube's help pages for Shorts name only those two things. Neither one asks for a #shorts tag in the title or description.

Over one minute, watch the music

YouTube Help says a Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim, of any type, is blocked worldwide until the claim is resolved. Under a minute, nothing changed. If your Short uses a song you don't own, keeping it to 60 seconds avoids the block.

How deploy.social handles it

Deploy's YouTube Shorts destination checks the same two rules before it posts: three minutes or less, and square or vertical. A video that's landscape or runs long gets turned back before the upload starts, rather than uploaded and quietly filed as a regular video.

Questions

What is the YouTube Shorts max length in 2026?

Three minutes, the same limit YouTube set when it raised Shorts from 60 seconds in October 2024.

What aspect ratio does a YouTube Short need?

Square or vertical, meaning the width can't be greater than the height. A 9:16 vertical video fills a phone screen, and a wider video gets filed as a regular video instead of a Short.

Is there a file size limit for YouTube Shorts specifically?

No. YouTube's general upload cap applies instead: 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is smaller.

Does adding #shorts to the title matter?

YouTube's help pages classify a Short by its shape and length alone, and neither one asks for #shorts.

Post your next Short in one upload.

Deploy checks your video against YouTube's three-minute, square-or-vertical rule before it posts, along with six other platforms' limits. 5 videos a month are free.
