Instagram caption character limit
An Instagram caption, hashtags and mentions included, can run up to 2,200 characters, whether you write it in the app or post it with an app like deploy.social.
Instagram's caption limits
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Caption length | 2,200 characters |
| Hashtags, Instagram's December 2025 announcement | 5 per post or Reel, rolling out gradually |
| Hashtags, Meta's developer reference | Up to 30 in one caption |
| @ mentions, Meta's developer reference | Up to 20 in one caption |
What counts toward the 2,200
Everything in the caption box draws from the same 2,200 characters: words, line breaks, hashtags and @ mentions. None of them gets a separate allowance.
Instagram's two hashtag numbers
Meta's developer reference for creating Instagram media still caps a caption at 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ mentions. In December 2025 Instagram announced a lower number: it "will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five," adding that "using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance and people's experience on Instagram."
Instagram hasn't said whether the five-hashtag cap covers posts made through its API, and the developer reference hasn't changed. Five or fewer is the number that works everywhere.
Two numbers Instagram doesn't publish
- Where the feed cuts a caption
- Around the first 125 characters, then a "more" link opens the rest. That figure comes from caption-length tools measuring it, not from Instagram's own documentation.
- How many people you can tag
- Instagram's help page on tagging people prints no number. The one documented figure is the developer reference's 20 @ mentions in a caption.
How deploy.social handles it
Deploy posts a caption through Instagram's API, so it holds every caption to the documented 2,200 characters and stops you before you go over, hashtags and mentions included. Keep it to five hashtags and the caption fits Instagram's newer limit too.
Questions
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
Up to 2,200 characters, both in the Instagram app and when you post with an app like deploy.social.
How many hashtags can you use on an Instagram post?
Five. Instagram announced in December 2025 that it is gradually moving every post and Reel to a 5-hashtag limit, down from 30. Meta's developer reference for posting apps like deploy.social still lists 30, but five is the number that works everywhere.
How many people can you tag in an Instagram post?
Meta's developer reference allows 20 @ mentions in one caption. Instagram's help page for tagging people doesn't print a number of its own.
Why does my Instagram caption get cut off in the feed?
Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters before adding a "more" link. That figure comes from caption tools measuring it, since Instagram doesn't publish one. The full caption is still there once a reader taps it.
Is the Instagram caption limit the same as TikTok's?
Yes, when you post with an app like deploy.social: both take 2,200 characters. The TikTok caption limit page has TikTok's own two numbers.
Write your caption once.
Deploy checks it against Instagram's 2,200 characters before it posts, along with every other platform's limit. 5 videos a month are free.
